Back then, people used to show affection to each other through handwritten letters, physical intimacy, or physical gifts. But as time passes, things have become slightly different. Most people nowadays are getting familiar with social media, and therefore, the way they create intimacy and show love has also changed. In this article, we will explore how five well-known love languages have shifted in this digital era.
Words of affirmation have always been one of the ideal ways to express feelings. Since social media platforms have become popular, affirmative words are more than handwritten letters or spoken words. Instead, individuals send text messages, GIFs, calls, and voice messages to make someone’s day. Also, sending Instagram reels has been trendy among younger generations and therefore, it is an indirect way for them to keep in touch with their friends, family, or loved ones. On top of that, a simple comment or a reaction to someone’s social media posts or stories can sometimes mean more than just liking a post.
Moreover, quality time is another important thing in a relationship. In the past, two individuals in a long-distance relationship might find it hard to communicate with each other but now, digital platforms make it convenient to share moments from afar. For example, people can host a watch party online and watch movies together likewise, they can do virtual hangouts like video calls or online gaming sessions on Discord.
Another love language that people prefer is acts of service. Digitally, it includes sharing articles, recommending movies, meal ideas, or travel spots that one thinks his or her partner is interested in. Additionally, ordering something online like a meal for someone when they are busy is a great way to show that you care about them. Not only that, sending reminders for important events through texts or calls and helping to organize tasks through digital spaces like calendars can be meaningful to them.
Giving gifts to someone has also been a popular way to show love for a long time. If the gift is meaningful and considerate enough, the receiver often feels ecstatic even if it is just a small present. Back then, they were often physical items and given in person. However, they have become more creative nowadays. Making a personalized Spotify playlist, sharing e-books, purchasing music or movie subscriptions, or game credits are common among people, especially teenagers. Although these gifts are virtual, they can still convey the deep emotion of the giver.
Lastly, physical touch is the key to showing intimacy in a relationship. Although it seems to be tricky to express digitally, there are alternative ways that help people close emotionally. Through texts, one can send various emojis such as virtual hugs, hand-holding, or blowing a kiss instead of doing it physically. Additionally, wearable technologies like digital bracelets can mimic touch with gentle vibrations so it makes people feel connected even when they are not together.
In the end, love finds a way – whether through handwritten letters or heart emojis, candlelit dinners, or virtual movie nights. While our grandparents might raise an eyebrow at sending love through pixels, what matters is that we're still finding creative ways to say "I care about you." After all, love was never meant to stay stuck in the past – it evolves with us, one notification at a time.
